Concordia Jr./Sr. High School began its very own youth group on Friday, March 23! The group named themselves “The Way” in honor of the name the early Christian Church chose for itself following the resurrection of Jesus.
The Way is a collection of many students from all grade levels of seven to twelve. The group currently meets every Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. in room 8 on the Sylmar campus. There will not be meetings on the days school is not in session or over Christmas or Easter breaks. We will, however, have a very busy and exciting summer filled with meetings, servant projects, fishFest in Irvine and the Equip Conference in Anaheim in July. Servant projects will include helping some special needs kids in athletic events and assisting with the move of Concordia San Fernando campus to its new location at Light and life church on Sayre Street (just a couple of miles away from the Sylmar campus). Future events include retreats, LOVEFEST 11, youth gatherings and more concerts.
This youth group is a way for young people to experience a full and fun lifestyle while growing in their faith and knowledge of God and serving His people. The Bible studies, topical studies and spiritual exercises are intended to connect you to Christ in a deep and everlasting way that cannot be broken by the ways of this world. Our goal is to graduate with a “Sticky Faith”, that will not only cling to us but attach to those around us so that more can be saved. The Way is the youth group that wants to delve deeply into God’s Word and see how His promises can change our lives for the better. It is very much about establishing a strong personal relationship with Jesus Christ and letting that relationship change the way we do things.
Youth Ministry is just one new thing we are doing at Concordia. In the months ahead we will gradually introduce our 1, 3 and five year vision plans for ministry here. The long range vision casting includes an expanded youth ministry, adult topical classes and Bible studies through the Concordia Community Center. The first adult topical class will be the parent version of the Sticky Faith study being done by The Way early in the new school year. The class will meet once a week for five weeks and it will provide “powerful strategies and practical ideas, enabling you to impact a deep and lasting faith in your children.” (Dr. Kara Powell, author of “Sticky Faith”) A schedule of adult classes and costs will be available before the summer break is over.
If anyone would like to financially support our youth and family ministry program, we would greatly appreciate it. Most of the Bible and Topical studies cost between $50 to $100 for the leader’s guides and kits. We hope to keep costs of the books the youth group will use to a minimal fee, so we would love open donations to Concordia’s youth ministry to keep our kids reading!
Our whole focus for youth ministry is to dig deep into the Word of God and seek His Will for our lives. We must let the discoveries we make about God and our deepening relationship with Him change the way we do things. To quote a line from my favorite youth group movie, “To Save A Life:, What’s the point of doing this if we aren't going to let it change us?”
